Project Afternight Controls

You only need two control layers in Project: Afternight: the island and the chart. Mixing them up is how people jump in the middle of a hold note. This page is the short map. Mania layouts and extra-key songs live on keybinds. The rest of the options tree is settings.

Island / overworld

That is the whole hangout map. You will not punch, block, or sprint as a combat verb. If E does nothing, you are too far from the speaker or another player is occupying the prompt. Walk closer. Versus seating is explained on versus modes.

Controller users should open Roblox’s own experience controls plus PAFN’s keybind menu. Do not assume Xbox defaults match 4K arrows.

4K chart defaults

During a song you hit receptors, not the island.

Two common maps:

• Arrow keys — Left / Down / Up / Right. Classic FNF muscle memory.
• WASD — A / S / W / D mapped to the same four directions. Comfortable if you already walk with WASD, but you must stop treating W as “forward” the moment the countdown hits.

Pick one and stay there for a week. Flickering between them is how you miss jump patterns you could hit in your sleep on PC FNF.

To rebind: pause or open the settings root → Keybinds → the 4K row. Most songs are 4K. The client also stores maps for 5K through 18K because some tabs (Shaggy, certain fan songs, the 8–18 key showcase charts) are not four notes. Those rows are useless until you open that song — then they are mandatory. Keybinds lists the modes and why seven-finger players still suffer on Rebellion 18K.

What not to bind

• Do not bind chart notes to E or Space if you still need jump/interact in the overworld and you tend to mash. Accidental jumps between songs are hilarious once.
• Do not overlap Roblox screenshot or record chords if you clip sessions.
• Do not leave two directions on the same key. The engine will not merge them kindly.

Mobile touch

On a phone the receptors are on-screen. Lower note speed, increase whatever “receptor size” or “lane width” slider exists in your build, and skip mania. The How to Play page already says desktop is the intended setup; this is the controls version of that warning.

If your thumb covers notes, downscroll versus upscroll is the first experiment, not a new executor. Scroll direction is a settings toggle, not a bind.

Practice habits that are actually binds

• Keep reset / restart chart on a key you can hit without leaving the receptor cluster.
• Confirm you know how to pause without opening Roblox’s menu on top of PAFN’s pause (two layers of UI is a classic miss).
• If you use a second keyboard profile for osu! or vanilla FNF, export it. PAFN will not import osu!. You retype the map once.

After binds, before Hard

Binds do not fix late hits. Note speed, hitsounds, and offset-adjacent options sit in settings. Accuracy habits sit in accuracy and FC. If you rebound 4K and still cannot pass Easy, the problem is not the letter on the keycap.

Shop items do not care which bind you used. They care that you passed the requirement. Get the keys stable, then go farm with shop unlocks.

When a patch adds a new key mode, it will show up as another row in the same Keybinds category. Eye of Corruption did not replace WASD with a secret fifth default. If your binds emptied after an update, you hit a client reset — re-enter them, then screenshot the menu so you are not doing this again next month. Patch notes live on updates.
