Getting Started in Project Afternight
Island, speakers, song UI, and the first hour that is not a 4v4 on Insane.
Project: Afternight looks like a hangout map until you sit on a speaker. This guide is the first hour: spawn, walk, interact, pick a chart, and leave with at least one shop toast. Read How to Play next for judgements; read controls if your fingers already hate the default binds.
What you joined
PAFN is a Roblox FNF client by Dawndreamer Studios (place 13042495892). It is still labeled beta, supports PC, mobile, and Xbox, and holds tens of millions of visits. The loop is Psych-style charts, a gigantic mod tab list, and a shop that unlocks by playing — not by Robux. Peak CCU has been thousands; average session length is short because people hop after a few songs. You do not need a tutorial NPC. You need a speaker.
The Roblox page warns about flashing lights, screen shakes, and jumpscares. Turn those down in settings before you open horror tabs.
Overworld controls
On the island:
- Move: WASD
- Jump: Space
- Interact: E
Walk to a pair of speakers (or a marked stage), face a side, press E. That opens the match flow: solo, wait for a player, or invite someone already in the server. You can also sit down and idle with an emote once you own one.
If the island feels empty, you are in a quiet server, not a broken game. Rejoin or use Roblox’s server list. Max players per instance is 40.
Song UI without panic
After you commit to a stage you pick:
- Category / tab (Friday Night Funkin, Mario’s Madness, ULTRAKILL OST, 17 Bucks, Eye of Corruption additions, and hundreds more — see mods).
- Song.
- Difficulty (Easy through Insane, plus special rates and mania keys on some charts).
In versus, both players can nominate a track. Older coverage described a 50/50 roll between the two picks. Newer patches also let you leave the stage if you hate the opponent’s choice; they keep playing as if you never sat down. Details on versus modes.
Solo is the correct first-hour mode. You can attach a bot opponent from settings instead of a human. That is how you learn without a chat argument.
First settings, not fiftieth
Before your first Hard song:
- Set 4K binds (arrows or WASD, or a custom map). Full tables: controls and keybinds.
- Set note speed to something you can read. Faster is not better on day one.
- Turn hitsounds on at a low volume.
- Enable downscroll or upscroll based on what your eyes already know from FNF or Funkin on PC.
- Find flashing lights / screen shake and pull them down.
The long tour is settings. Do not binge every slider. Chaotix’s launch video in the middle of this page is still the best visual of how tabs, shop preview, and options sit together even after later UI reworks.
First shop loop
Open the shop after one Easy pass on the original FNF tab. Preview an animation. Equip colors: blue is you, orange is the bot. Beat Spookeez or South at 70% / 1x with modcharts on if you want Skid and Pump — that example from launch coverage still teaches the rule. Full checklist: how rewards work and shop unlocks.
Ignore every “WELCOME for 1,000 coins” thumbnail. That is fake codes territory.
First hour checklist
- Join the Roblox place.
- Press E on a speaker, pick solo.
- Play Tutorial or an Easy Week 1 chart with audio on.
- Open settings, bind 4K, set note speed.
- Open the shop, search one character you like, read the requirement, play that song next.
- Bookmark accuracy and FC for later, not tonight.
On a phone, do not copy a desktop note speed. Use the mobile guide before you queue Hard.
If the client stutters, drop extras in settings (camera movement, notesplashes, visualizer) before you reach for a script. If you still want autoplay, at least read script safety first.
You are now past the hangout map illusion. The rest of the wiki is charts, unlocks, and patches — starting with How to Play.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Do I need friends to start?
No. Solo and official bots are enough. Versus is optional — see versus modes.
Where is the tutorial?
The original FNF Tutorial chart plus this page. Judgements continue on How to Play.
Why is the game still called beta?
Dawndreamer still labels it beta. Content volume is already huge; polish is uneven. Track patches on updates.
